The switchboard (or DB box) is the single most important electrical component in any property, yet it's often the most neglected — out of sight, out of mind, until something goes wrong.
Recommended servicing frequency
- Residential: a visual/functional check every 2–3 years, or sooner if the property is older than 15–20 years.
- Commercial/industrial: annual inspection is generally recommended, given higher loads and usage intensity.
- After any major renovation that added significant new circuits or load.
What a proper service checks
- Breaker condition and correct trip ratings
- RCCB/ELCB functionality (test trip)
- Loose or corroded connections (a common cause of overheating)
- Correct circuit labelling
- Overall load balance across phases (for larger installations)
Signs you shouldn't wait for the schedule
Warm panel covers, burning smells, visible discolouration, or unexplained trips are all reasons to get your switchboard checked immediately rather than waiting for the next scheduled service.
