With how-to videos everywhere, it can be tempting to handle a "simple" electrical fix yourself. In Singapore, though, this isn't just a safety question — it's a regulatory one.
The legal angle
Fixed electrical installation work in Singapore generally must be carried out by a Licensed Electrical Worker. This isn't red tape for its own sake — it exists because faulty electrical work is a leading cause of residential fires.
The safety angle
Even "simple" tasks like replacing a socket or light fitting carry real risk if the circuit isn't properly isolated first, or if wiring is misidentified. Mistakes aren't always obvious immediately — a poorly made connection can work fine for months before overheating and failing.
The insurance angle
Unauthorised electrical work can also affect home insurance claims if it's later found to have contributed to a fire or damage — a detail many homeowners don't realise until it's too late.
What's reasonably safe to DIY
Replacing a bulb, resetting a tripped breaker (once, to test), or swapping a plug on a portable appliance are generally fine. Anything involving the fixed wiring, DB box, or new circuits should go to a licensed professional.
